BEYOND FIG LEAVES does not seem like a sewing-related name, but it has an interesting history. When we were trying to create a unique name, we read through all of the Scripture verses in the Bible that include the word, “SEWING”. The very first verse listed caught our attention…
“When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took some of its fruit, and ate. Then she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate it, too. Their eyes were opened, and they both knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together, and made coverings for themselves.” -Genesis 3:6-7, World English Bible
As you can see, Adam & Eve were the first people to sew materials together to create the first clothing!
As we tried to create an interesting play on words, we thought about how far we have come from sewing fig leaves together….later in verse 21, the Scriptures say that “Yahweh God made garments of animal skins for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them.” From then on, humans have expanded their knowledge in sewing skills, creating unique clothing designs throughout the centuries, establishing renown fashion houses and manufacturing specific tools and machinery to create mass-produced clothing. As you can see, humans have moved beyond overlapping and interweaving fig leaves to cover our bodies and instead have turned this basic need into an essential part of our everyday lives! Using amazing designs, fabrics and notions to compliment our features and lifestyle, sewing has evolved beyond measure. Hence the name….Beyond Fig Leaves Sewing!
